How we build
The slab is only as good as the base
Most concrete problems start under the slab, not in it. A driveway that settles or a patio that breaks apart in two winters usually sat on a thin base with little or no compaction. That is why the unglamorous part of the job gets the most attention here.
- Excavation to full depth and a gravel base compacted in lifts, not just raked flat.
- Four inches of concrete for standard residential flatwork, thicker where trucks will park.
- Control joints cut at the right spacing and depth, so cracking happens at the joint instead of across the middle of the slab.
- Forms pulled, gravel raked back, and the site left clean when we load up.

How a job runs

Estimate
We walk the site, measure, and talk through how the surface will be used. The quote breaks out excavation, base, concrete, and finish so you can compare it against other bids.

Prep & forms
Old concrete comes out if there is any. We excavate to depth, compact a gravel base in lifts, and set forms to the finished grade with drainage sloped away from the house.

Pour & finish
Concrete goes down at the thickness the job calls for and gets screeded flat, then floated. The final finish depends on the surface: broom for traction outside, trowel-smooth for garage floors.

Cure & seal
We cut control joints once the surface can take a saw. Foot traffic is fine in a day or two, vehicles at about a week, and full strength takes about 28 days. Once fully cured, exterior concrete takes a sealer to slow water absorption before freeze-thaw season.

How thick should a concrete driveway or patio be?
Four inches is the standard for residential flatwork like driveways, patios, and walkways. Slabs that carry heavy vehicles, like an RV pad, are usually poured thicker, often 5 to 6 inches over a compacted gravel base.
When can concrete be poured in Ohio?
The main season runs roughly April through October. Concrete needs to stay above about 40 degrees while it cures, so cold-weather pours take blankets and additives, and most exterior work waits for spring. Ohio's freeze-thaw cycles are also why joint spacing and drainage matter more here than in warmer states.
How often does concrete need to be sealed?
Every 2 to 3 years for exterior concrete in Ohio. Sealing slows water absorption, which is what does the damage when trapped moisture freezes and thaws through the winter. It also helps the surface shed deicing salt.
